What Do You Want More of in Your Life?

“What you pay attention to influences your thoughts, which impacts your actions, which determines the outcome of your life.” -Darius Foroux

As I’ve grown older, I’ve become more protective of who and what I give my attention to. This means being more intentional about what media I take in, books I read, friends I spend time with because what you give your attention to day in and day out will project itself onto you.

WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE OF IN YOUR LIFE?

It helps to know what you want more of in your life - whether that’s to develop a certain skill, become more resilient or creative, be more healthy, be more happy.

For me, I wanted to feel like I have more time (or control of my time) and be more bold in exploring my creativity.

TAKE AN AUDIT OF WHERE YOUR ATTENTION GOES

In order to map a destination, it helps to know where you’re currently at. Take a mental audit of where your attention is going in an average day or week.

  • What media do you give your attention to?

  • What people do you tend to spend the most time with?

  • What kinds of internal conversations do you typically have?

Ask yourself if these things you are giving your attention to are serving you. If they are moving you closer towards what you want to invite more of in your life.

SHIFT YOUR ATTENTION - WHERE IT GOES…GROWS

You don’t have to make a huge, Herculean change. Small changes, over time, add up.

For me, it started with reading more books and listening to more podcasts on topics of time management, creativity, taking action, and fear. Reading the news to have more control of what I wanted to pay attention to rather than watching the news. Spending more time with friends who were supportive and had growth mindsets, and less time with those who exhausted me from their tendency to complain and gossip. Replacing some of my time reading email upon waking up with focusing on gratitude and that day’s intention instead.

You got this! Just one small, mindful step, one day at a time. And before you know it, the seed of attention you planted will blossom. Where you attention goes…grows.
